James Maddison withdrew from the England squad due to an ankle injury

James Maddison has withdrawn from the England squad for the upcoming European Championship qualifiers with an ankle injury.

The Tottenham midfielder sustained the injury in the first half of Tottenham's 4-1 loss to Chelsea in the Premier League on Monday.

Maddison was called up to the England squad for the first time since November 2021, and he was hoping to make his international debut in the upcoming matches against Malta and North Macedonia.

However, his hopes have been dashed by the ankle injury.

Tottenham have confirmed that Maddison will remain at Hotspur Way for rehabilitation with the club's medical staff.

The club did not say how long they expect Maddison to be sidelined for, but it is likely that he will miss the rest of the year.

Maddison's withdrawal from the England squad is a blow for manager Gareth Southgate.

The midfielder has been in excellent form for Tottenham this season, scoring four goals and providing five assists in 13 Premier League appearances.

Southgate will now have to decide who to call up to replace Maddison in the squad.

Some of the options available to Southgate include Mason Mount, Conor Gallagher, and Phil Foden.

England will play Malta at Wembley on Friday, November 17, before travelling to North Macedonia three days later.
